Description

One of the many challenges faced by teacher-librarians wanting to develop their student's new and multiple information literacies, is the process of locating engaging, cost effective, intuitive learning technologies. This process is even more difficult when searching for online applications that assist auditory and visual learners to easily communicate and express themselves. Of course there is the old standby of embedding sound, photos, and video in PowerPoint slides (I can't believe I just called PowerPoint 'old'), but even this can become a very repetitive and uninspiring process after a few months. And PowerPoint can be a less than fruitful communication technology for auditory and visual learners wishing to push the edges of their literacy experiences and expressions. Fortunately, recent developments in online mashup tools are providing teacher-librarians with new information communication technologies that fill this gap. At this point, I can hear several readers exclaiming, "Whoa, hold on Keith. I understood everything in that last sentence except the little bit about the 'mashup tools.' Kinda sounds like a disco dance from the seventies!" In a manner of speaking, you're right. The expression 'mash-up', or 'mashup', was originally coined in the late seventies to describe the practice of combining or 'mashing' two pieces of music together (usually hip hop) to create a new song.
